Se non ti piacciono gli occhiali puoi mettere le lenti.
Se ti infastidiscono le lenti puoi operarti.
Se, nel peggiore dei casi, sei ciecio, o vedi irrimediabilmente male, puoi mostrare agli altri quello che immagini, quello che senti e quello che sei. Per esempio con la fotografia.
In un articolo del Time, The Art and Heart of Blind Photographers (L’arte e il cuore dei fotografi ciechi) si possono vedere alcune fotografie fatte da fotografi con gravi disabilità visive. Le foto sono alcune di quelle esposte alla mostra Sight Unseen al California Museum of Photography tenutasi nel 2009.
Sembra un paradosso eppure i risultati permettono di riflettere su cosa sia la visione e sul significato stesso della fotografia.
Infatti alcuni degli autori delle foto sul Time sono un gruppo di fotografi impegnati in questa ricerca e su nuovi modi di creare immagini: Sight Unseen al California Museum of Photography è un collettivo di New York che esplora la relazione tra vista e immaginazione e che rivela l’inganno della fotografia. Le immagini non sono la realtà, ma come noi la vediamo, che sia con gli occhi o con la mente. Questi autori e questo mezzo espressivo ci permettono di addentrarci un po’più a fondo nel loro universo rendendo visibile ciò che immaginano, ciò che sentono più che vedono, rendendo più esplicito il vero senso della fotografia in generale. Infatti se possiamo considerarla un’arte è perchè in qualche modo è sempre soggettiva, racconta qualcosa del fotografo che tra i tanti momenti, fotogrammi e settaggi, ha scelto quelli che restituiscono l’emozione di un paesaggio, un volto, un istante, quasi sempre irripetibili.
In questo senso anche una macchina fotografica può essere considerata un ausilio, una retina su cui imprimere idee e veicolarle al mondo, ricordandoci che ‘l’essenziale e’ invisibile agli occhi’(Il Piccolo Principe – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry), ma alcune immagini catturano quell’essenza e la rendono visibile a chi può vedere la fotografia una volta sviluppata.
Ma come fanno, in pratica, i ciechi a scattare foto?
Alcuni si fanno aiutare da assistenti per impostare e poi farsi descrivere gli scatti, altri solo puntano e scattano nella direzione giusto.
Pete Eckert, affetto da Retinite Pigmentosa, usa torce, accendini, candele, laser per dipingere il soggetto e imprimerlo sulla pellicola.
Una delle tecniche di Kurt Weston consiste nel chiedere ai suoi soggetti di mettere le loro facce su uno scanner. Questo non solo dà il suo lavoro un tono di iperrealismo, ma crea una superficie estremamente ridotta di messa a fuoco in cui la carne compressa contro il vetro è vivida e dettagliato, ma tutto ciò che è più lontano svanisce rapidamente in sfocatura e nero.
Gerardo Nigenda includeva testi in Braille nelle sue fotografie. Questi testi sono una descrizione letterale della fotografia, che occupa un intero foglio o una sola frase che riassume ciò che lo aveva portato a scattare la fotografia.
Victorine Floyd Fludd dice che una buona foto non viene da dentro. E’ un amore. Proprio come quando ami qualcuno e provi a dimostrare l’amore. Tiri fuori tutto per ottenere quella foto come desideri che sia.
Ma l’arte non è prima di tutto per l’artista stesso? Perchè un cieco sente il bisogno di rappresentare qualcosa che poi non potrà rivedere? L’arte non dovrebbe resituire le sensazioni anche all’artista ?
In questo senso una scultura può essere percepita dall’autore come dagli ‘osservatori’.

In some cases you can make a surgery.
If, in the worst of cases, you are blind or badly impaired, you can show to others what you imagine,what you feel and what you are. For example, with photography.
In an article in the Time, The Art and Heart of Blind Photographers you can see some photos taken by photographers with serious visual impairments. The photos show some of those exposed at Sight Unseen at California Museum of Photography held in 2009.
It seems paradoxical but the results make you think on what is vision and the very meaning of photography.
In fact, some of the authors of the photos on Time is a group of photographers involved in this research and new ways of creating images: Seeing with Photography is a collective of New York that explores the relationship between vision and imagination and reveals the deception of photography . The images are not reality, but how we see it, whether with the eyes or the mind. These authors and this medium allows us to delve a little deeper into their world by making visible what they imagine, what they feel, making more explicit the true meaning of photography in general. In fact, if we consider it an art it is because in some way it is always subjective, tells something of the photographer that among the many moments, frames and settings, chose those that represents the emotion of a landscape, a face, a situation, almost always unrepeatable.
In this sense, a camera can be seen as a technologiacal aid, a retina on which you can print ideas and convey them to the world, reminding us that the ‘essentialis invisible to the eye ‘(The LittlePrince – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry), but some images capture that essence and make it visible to those who can see the photo once developed.
But how do the blinds take pictures?
Some have assistants to help to select and then describe the shots, others just point and click in the right direction.
Pete Eckert who suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, use flashlights, lighters, candles, laser to paint the subject and print it on film.
One of the techniques of Kurt Weston is to ask his subjects to put their faces on a scanner. This not only gives his work a tone of realism, but it creates a very small area of focus in which the flesh compressed against the glass is vivid and detailed, but all the rest fades away more quickly in black and blur.
Gerardo Nigenda included Braille texts in his photographs. These texts are a literal description of the photo, which takes up an entire sheet or only one phrase that sums up what had led him to take a picture.
Victorine Floyd Fludd said that a good photo is from within. It ‘s a love. Just like when you love someone and try to show love.You’re going to go all out to get that picture how you want it to be
But isn’t it art first for the artist himself? Why would a blind man feel the need to represent something that won’t see again? Shouldn’t art return feelings even to the artist?
In this sense, a sculpture can be seen by the author as much as by observers.
Has this a different meaning?
